Poolside Decking: Material Choices That Stay Cool and Safe

A poolside deck has to do more than look good - it needs to stay cool under summer sun, remain slip-resistant when wet, and withstand constant exposure to pool chemicals and UV.

Heat Management

Dark timber decks can become painfully hot underfoot on a 35-degree day. Lighter WPC tones like Natural Oak and Silver Grey reflect more heat and stay significantly cooler. If your pool area gets full sun, prioritise lighter colours.

Slip Resistance

Wet feet on a smooth surface is a safety risk. WPC decking with a grooved or textured profile provides grip without feeling rough underfoot. Look for products with documented slip ratings if this is a concern.

Chlorine and Salt Resistance

Pool chemicals are aggressive. Timber can bleach and degrade around splash zones. WPC is inherently resistant to chemical attack - it won't fade, warp, or soften from chlorine or saltwater exposure.

The Barefoot Test

Walk on it barefoot. That's the real test. WPC stays splinter-free and consistently textured, which matters when children are running between the pool and the house all summer.

Design Tip

Run boards perpendicular to the pool edge. This creates a natural visual frame and means water drains along the board direction rather than pooling between boards at the pool's edge.
